India celebrates Father's Day

New Delhi, June 17 : The day dedicated to Fathers have finally arrived as children find some time for their father and explain to them their importance in their lives.

India on Sunday is celebrating ‘Father’s Day’ as children try to spend some moments of togetherness with their father on this special Sunday of the year.

Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, but it is also celebrated widely on other days.

Originating from United States, ‘Father's Day’ has a significant historical context and background.

It is said that it was Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane in Washington who came up with the idea of celebrating ‘Father’s Day’ in 1909.

She received support from the local religious leaders and the pagers of history says that it was June 19, 1910 when the first ‘Fathers Day’ was celebrated.

Observance of the third Sunday of June as the ‘Father's Day’ was decreed by law in 1972, making the celebration of a day dedicated to the 'fathers' a mandatory one.

On this date children present cards and small gifts to their father and convey their importance in their lives.

However, in India marking a special day dedicated to certain relationship have always triggered some debate and 'Father's Day' was no exception.

"I feel that it is again a business gimmick like all other days which we celebrate. I love my father and will try to gift him everyday, a single day for me is not so important. I celebrate the occasion every day," Arpita Saha, a house wife from Kolkata said.

According to Patna-based IT professional Tanmoy Ghosh, "In our busy life we tend to forget our parents these days.We meet them every day but we can hardly get some time to spend some time together. I support and love celebrating the occasion."

Shampa Das, a student of Class I however loves the idea.

"I will present my daddy a small greetings card. I have painted it on Friday after returning from school," said Shampa.

Maria Goretti posted: "To my daddy,your daddy and all the daddy's. Thank you daddy for always making me feel like "daddy's special little girl'. Happy Fathers."

Actor Priyanka Chopra: "Happy fathers day Dad,u have set such high standards..that noone can ever match up,thank u for being my best friend!love bein ur lil girl!"

Bengali actor Swastika Mukherjee:"Happy baba's day! Proud 2 be ur daughter...ur d bestest baba in ths whole world!!"

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher: "Happy father's day to you ALL.:)"

Filmmaker Karan Johar said: "Fathers can be confrontational but have always been inspirational....happy fathers day to all!!!"

Actor Sonam Kapoor, daughter of the evergreen Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor said: " My dad is my hero.. Happy fathers day to the coolest and best father in the whole wide world!"

Actor Isha Koppikar posted: " an d Happy Fathers Day Annu(my dad)!! I am what I am because of d values uve inculcated n me.I'm proud to b ur daughter.U my Hero."

Writer Chetan Bhagat urged people to watch him on a show, saying: "Hi All. I love being a dad. Watch me and my boys on 'daddy's day in,' a father's day special on ndtv good times at 11am today!"

One can gift precious metals like platinum to his father on Sunday to make the present an evergreen one as several leading stores like Diti, Manubhai Jewellers, TBZ, Orra offering wide range of white metal.

The price range is starting from Rs. 30000.

Renowned jewellery brands like D’damas, , Sangini, Gili and Menz have launched a collection of exquisite branded jewellery for men that include ring, bracelets and cufflinks especially keeping in mind the occasion.

D’damas offers solitaire rings with the price range of it starting from Rs. 35,000.

Sangini’s men’s collection starts from Rs. 38,000 while Gili’s men’s rings are diamond studded and the price range starts from Rs. 40,000.

However, if you plan to present your daddy something different this year then you can always give him a box of mouth watering chocolates.
