Bob Welch, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist, dies at 66

Bob Welch, former guitarist of the band Fleetwood Mac, was found dead in Nashville with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Nashville police. Welch, who also had a solo career as a musician, was 66.

In a statement, Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said, "The police department responded to his address at 12:18 p.m., where Mr. Welch was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest."

A suicide note was found in Welch's home. According to Aaron, Welch's wife found him in his home with the chest wound at 12:15 p.m.

Welch left the band shortly before it became big, only a part of its '70s British blues days. He was nevertheless instrumental to the band's sound with his work on songs including "Future Games," "Bare Trees" and "Heroes are Hard to Find."

Welch was absent from the band before the McVie divorce and before the band's mainstream success with their albums Fleetwood Mac and then Rumors. In 1977, Welch went solo and had the hit "Ebony Eyes" and "Sentimental Lady," which reached No. 8 on the Billboard chart. Other singles included "Precious Love" and "Hot Love, Cold World."

Stevie Nicks told The Associated Press, "The death of Bob Welch is devastating....I had many great times with him after Lindsey and I joined Fleetwood Mac. He was an amazing guitar player â€" he was funny, sweet â€" and he was smart. I am so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac â€" so, so sad...."

Welch was born in Los Angeles in 1945 and has lived in Nashville since the 1990s.
